(To hear us talk)The tree the tempest with a crash of woodThrows down in front of us is not barOur passage to our journey"s end for good,But just to ask us who we think we areInsisting always on our own way so.She likes to halt us in our runner tracks,And make us get down in a foot of snow

You are watching: On a tree fallen across the road

Debating what to do without an ax.And yet she knows obstruction is in vain:We will not be put off the final goalWe have it hidden in us to attain,Not though we have to seize earth by the poleAnd, tired of aimless circling in one place,Steer straight off after something into space.

We are humans bent on subduing nature in the name of progress. Sometimes nature"s power gives us a slight pause, but we continue on in our hubris and confidence. When we destroy this planet we will start on Space.

" We will not be put off......in us to attain" - Each one of us has felt that driving force inside us. The poet has spoken for all. A great poet indeed!
