The abrupt end to the 2020 NCAA gymnastics season was a shock to everyone, us included. And while we understand and support the measures being taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19, it means that a lot of us are suddenly left with extra time on our hands…

Which is why we’ve decided to embark on an important journey, one that will take us back through one of television’s most important series to date: Make It or Break It. Every Saturday (and a number of other bonus days) from now until the 2021 season, our editors Katherine, Kalley and Claire will be breaking down and recapping each episode of everyone’s favorite gymnastics show.

Want to watch along? You can find MIOBI on Hulu and the Freeform app, all you have to have is a subscription/cable login. You can also buy the DVDs or purchase seasons or single episodes on various platforms, like iTunes. Join us in the cheesiness and the early 2010s TV gymnastics by using the hashtag #MakeItOrBreakItDown on Twitter as you watch.

You are watching: Make it or break it season 1 episode 10

S1E10: All That Glitters

The team has arrived at the Boston competition venue, aka the black pyramid of Giza. I feel like this is what the Hunger Games arena looked like.

We end the episode with a rather emotional view of Emily, Kaylie and Lauren in Payson’s hospital room as they all hold hands. But of course it’s made decidedly less heartfelt with the blaring royalty free music in the background. And that’s curtains on the first half of the season!

Balance Check

Every week we will break down the little moments that stood out as being extremely on point and those that wobbled a bit too much. Shout out to Vulture and its Gossip Girl Reality Index for providing the template for our version.

Faker Than An Elite Level Floor Routine With a Whip to Whip Pass

A teen being able to hijack Radiohead’s tour bus for his personal use. Minus 5.Payson’s dad vaulting over the barrier to get down to the arena floor. Security? Minus 2.That hotel looked a little too boujee. I feel like sports travel calls for a nice Best Western, especially on this gym’s budget. Minus 4.Kelly Parker waltzing around everywhere with an entourage felt fake. Also, why did none of them (all adults) tell her she’s being a brat? Minus 6.Everyone’s obsessive attention to scores during the competition. I feel like, in real time, they don’t know. Minus 5.

Total: -22

Realer Than Straight Men Being Repulsed by Tampons

Damon entering the Kmetkos’ house because Brian didn’t shut the door. Seems like typical teen boy absentmindedness. Plus 4.A lot of that meet commentary hit home, especially the references to smiling. Plus 5. Sasha carrying ice back to his hotel room at night. It just feels like that tracks. Plus 5.Agent Lady swooping in at the end of the episode to capitalize on Kaylie’s success after trashing her. Vultures, all of them! Plus 6.

The awkwardness between Damon and Kaylie’s brother as they both consider their situationships with Emily. I do get it. Plus 6.

For its midseason finale, MIOBI earned the equivalent of Lauren’s place at nationals: a fabulous 4!
