You are watching: How was the northern renaissance different from the renaissance in italy

During the Renaissance in Italy, wealthy people and merchants used their money to sponsor artists. In the Northern Renaissance, educated people combined classical learning with interest in religious ideas.
Northern Renaissance artists were especially interested in realism, religious subjects, landscapes and lifelike portraits . Northern Renaissance artists also introduced the use of oil-based paints.
The Chinese invented block printing. Europeans tried the process but it was too slow to satisfy the Renaissance demand for knowledge. Johann Gutenberg, from Germany, invented a printing press that produced books quickly and cheaply. Gutenberg printed a complete Bible, the Gutenberg Bible, in about 1455 - the first full-sized book printed with movable type. Now, many copies could be produced of a single book and were cheap enough that many people could buy them. The first produced mainly religious works and then began providing books on other subjects.

The Renaissance was an era of cultural rebirth and achievement that occurred in Italy during the fourteenth, fifteenth, and sixteenth centuries. The period can be best described as the rise of humanism, which was an intellectual movement that emphasized secular ideas found in literature from Ancient Greece and Rome.Among these ancient ideas was a newfound faith in the individual. The God-fearing Middle Ages viewed man as "unworthy by virtue" and "stained by original sin". However, as Renaissance Humanism brought a newfound interest in education in art and the humanities, people became less absorbed in religious hierarchy and more curious about the capabilities of man. As the Renaissance developed, Individualism became a prominent theme in Italy. Many philosophers wrote about the potential of man and developed their own beliefs as to the kind of person an individual should aim to be. These views inspired many people to invest in their studies of the arts and humanities, and as a result, many significant achievements came out of the Renaissance.
