By March,Carmen was in her first month’s pregnancy. During this era,Hector’s popularity had grown with the smashing albums “El Malo”and the “Hustler.” As the lead vocalist in Willie Colon’s band, his success extended beyond New York. They were booked to perform inPanama, Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. During Carmen’spregnancy, Hector asked Carmen to marry him. He also advised Carmento move to a house he owned in Puerto Rico. Carmen refused to marryhim or move to Puerto Rico, because he was always flirting with otherwomen, even in her presence. She felt she could never trust him. AsCarmen’s pregnancy progressed, Hector’s popularity managed todivert his attention away from home. Nine months later, Carmen gavebirth to a baby boy at Jacobi Hospital, in the Bronx. On October 30,1968, 7:31am, she gave birth to yours truly, Jose Alberto Perez.Since I was born one week early, Hector was unable to be present, dueto concert engagements. While on the road, the family managed toinform him that he was the father of a son. As soon as he receivedword that his son was born, he rushed to the hospital. Two months after thebirth, Hector and Carmen baptized their son on January 19, 1969, atSt. Lucy’s Church, located at 2511 Bronxwood Avenue, in the Bronx. The godparents were Olga de Abreu and Willie Colon. Olga de Abreu wasa good friend of Carmen, while Willie was Hector’s music associateand friend. After the baptism, they had a family reunion at Carmen’smother’s house. The family included the grandparents, Margarita deCastro and Antonio Castro. Also present were the godparents, Hector’stwo sisters Norma and Priscilla Perez. Carmen’s sisters andbrothers included Aurora, Elizabeth, Milagros Castro, Fernando andJose Castro. Later that night, Hector received a telephone call atCarmen’s house. Nilda Roman called Hector, to inform him that shewas pregnant. Unexpectedly, Hector gave the telephone to Carmen. After Carmen hung up the telephone, she asked him two questions, “Howdid this woman get my number? Are you having an affair with her?”Embarrassed, Hector admitted the fact and apologized to Carmen. Hetold her he was ashamed of his involvement with this woman. Hectortold Carmen that he had an affair after a show, and shortly after wasinformed that the woman was pregnant. He went on to say that duringher pregnancy, he was not able to spend a lot of time with her. Sincethe nightclub circuit had his calendar completely booked, he becamelonely one night and had an affair. Then in a candid and ignorantmanner, he told Carmen, “This woman is pressuring me. What should Ido?” Hurt and insulted, Carmen told Hector that she could take careof her son. Then she told him to leave her house. Carmen was a proudwoman, with the support of her family. She knew she could take careof herself, without Hector’s help. To avoid further confrontationwith Carmen or her family, Hector left with Willie Colon and hissisters.
